You’ll also learn a huge amount about a lot of things and a lot of this will be transferable allowing you to go on to do other things should you wish. You will learn for instance a lot about horticulture. You’ll learn about irrigation, and you’ll learn about organic gardening – how to plant plants next to each other and keep them together, and also about grouting and how to put grout around your garden tiles.

On top of all this you’ll also be learning the design aspect and this is something that could later land you work in interior design or other architecture. It’s such a diverse process that you can walk into a huge number of rewarding and high paying jobs.

 

When I first left school one job I considered was to be a landscape architect. Now that I own my first home, I have renewed my interest in landscaping.

You have put hours of research and effort into perfecting your CV. Make sure you send one! Obvious I know, but a lot of people see the easy way as not sending a covering letter at all! Maybe the application criteria didn’t particularly specify? No matter. It is proper business etiquette to do so, so make sure you follow the rules!

Forget the essay. Whilst it is essential that you have a cover letter, it is just a taster for the main course that is your CV. There is no need to waffle endlessly. It needs to be readable and easily digestible.

Saying this, do not just send a ‘one liner’ A very typical cover letter consists of the ‘ Dear Sir, I attach my CV for your perusal’ line. This is as unacceptable as not sending one at all. Convince the reader they need to know more. If sending via email, it is even more important to keep the letter shorter than a hard copy.

Appropriate, please. Consider the tone of your covering letter. The language of a CV is largely perfunctory, and does little to show that sparkling personality you have. A cover letter is an opportunity to allow a more, friendly, personal tone. Keep it appropriate and relevant to the employer at hand. It can be endearing, but don’t go too far.

The name of the game. Being too generic is not going to endear you to any hiring manager. It looks like you have scatter gunned the letter and CV to anyone and everyone, and shows little loyalty to acquiring any particular role. You must make sure you address and direct your letter to a real live person! Even if you have to do some work and find out who it is!. Your research will be rewarded. Don’t forget to use ‘Dear Mr./Mrs? Dr. or Ms as opposed to first names.

It’s all about them. Remember, it’s all about what you can do for them, rather than what the company can do for you. Make the focus of your letter the fact that you will bring such undisputed brilliance to the company, how could they not hire you? Prove throughout your letter what you can bring to their table.

Final check. It’s really important that your letter and CV contain zero error. Even if your spelling skills are top notch, in this digital age, it is easy to get sloppy and trip up if you are customizing said letter over and over for different employers (as you should be) Make sure names are spelled correctly and never assume the gender of a hiring manager until you know for sure, as many names are ambiguous with regards to this.

Choosing a Career – Self Service Of Help Me Please?

I recently wrote in Dr G’s Eyes Wide Open that Career Advice is often approached by parents and their kids as the “Elephant in the Room”. Parents see the topic as large and complicated because they generally had negative experiences in their youth and their kids see the issue as one best to avoid because they really don’t have any user friendly tools to help them to make progress. Getting to grips with the world of careers is best avoided or at least delayed until we no longer can delay for any longer!

One of the big issues is how best to balance who does what. By that, I mean who takes responsibility for progress in deciding on career choices and at what point “expert” advice is sought. It seems to me that there’s an ideal balance between an individual student and their career responsibilities and getting external help involved. For many students, outside help happens well before they’ve really tried to even think about the issues for themselves. To me, this seems the wrong way around. It’s a bit like a consultant arriving at the doors of corporation X with a ready solution to their strategic problem but the board haven’t agreed that there is a strategy problem.

Students need to be receptive to external help – in whatever form that arrives. Receptivity is best raised, in my view, by the student initially trying to make progress on their own, with any tools they can pick up on the web. One of the problems at that age, is that you don’t know what you don’t know. So, students need to find tools that will help them to realise what they don’t know and improve their self – insight. It’s only once an individual has grappled with the issues on their own, made some progress and perhaps struggled in a particular area that this person is ready to engage with outside help. I’m not only referring to the fact that the student now has a better feel for the questions they want to ask and have answered, I’m also referring to the fact that, having found the process challenging means that the student is far more likely to be receptive to advice and input from someone else.

Once the student has engaged with an expert and had some of the difficult questions answered and pointers given to others, they are then “liberated” to make further progress on their own. At this point, assuming that the student is starting to focus on several career options, research skills become important.

So, I recommend a process that looks something like this:

  1. Student need to grapple on their own and with some input from friends and family with questions such as ..”what career suits me best”, “how do I choose a career” and others. During this phase, the student needs to network to find useful tools to improve their self insight as well as insight into possible careers. In my view, the initial focus should be on self insight and then on understanding possible career options as this is a great way to get some focus
  1. Then, once the student has made some progress and been frustrated in other areas, outside help is needed and will be more welcome. Although psychometric tests may have a role to play here, my view is that a more modern approach should be taken. By modern, I mean that the student is the customer and the ultimate decisions need to be taken by the customer. Students therefore need to be challenged and not condescended to.   1. When this is complete and a clear focus has been agreed, it’s back to the student with an onus on researching careers in more detail, expanding their personal network in these areas and looking for internships and work experience opportunities.

How to Ace your Interview

Given its importance, tips on interview techniques and performance have been eagerly devoured by employees and would be employees of all ages. Large businesses have been created on the back of this problem and the current economic downturn puts even more pressure on those fortunate enough to even get an interview to perform in.

The first thing is to be really, really well prepared. If you think you can pitch up on the day and do your thing with little preparation, you’re wrong! At minimum, you need to know the history, sector, products/services and competitors of the company you’re interviewing with. This includes a thorough review of the website, press releases as well as most recent annual reports. These will be a goldmine of information and will put you on the front foot in the interview. If you know more about last year’s financial performance than the HR Recruiter who is interviewing you, you’re going to look good. The frequency of press releases will tell you whether this is a marketing savvy company looking to grow or a traditional company with less focus on impressing the market.  Any good website will contain the key terms and strategies a company is trying to achieve. There’s another key factor though and that’s the ability to think on your feet. Regardless of how well you’re prepared there will always be something that happens that is unexpected. If you’re thrown by a tough question that you can’t handle and didn’t anticipate, the wheels can come off. Your ability to think on your feet is vital.
