No one is always as productive as they want to be, not even people who have perfected their time management abilities. Time management skills, however, are still well worth developing. People who are good at managing their time get a lot more done than those who aren’t. Those who do more in less time also have a greater sense of meaning and accomplishment about their lives. If you want to acquire better time management skills, the following tips will be useful.
You will first want to figure out what you are doing now. In the beginning don’t change a thing. Simply begin making a list of things you do and how long it takes you to do them. If your morning routine begins with reading two hours of the news write it down. Do this for a weeks tasks. This will help you see just where your time is going to waste. It is at this point that you can begin figuring out how to change what is necessary to change. When people ask you to do something, don’t be afraid to turn them down. It’s almost impossible to develop time management skills if you can’t say no when you have to. If people are in the habit of looking to you whenever they need help, you will have trouble finishing your own tasks. If you have important things to do, get in the habit of refusing, as nicely as possible, requests for help. You don’t have to say “no” all the time. When helping other people will prevent you from doing essential things, however, you should be able to say no.
Give yourself a reward! If you finish your to-do list early, let yourself have some free time to “play”! It’s human nature to work more productively when there’s a reward for doing well. Come up with a reward that’s appropriate for you. Anything that makes you feel like working more productively will be helpful. This gives you a pleasurable goal to strive for, aside from just completing the job. You don’t have the same incentive to work all day when there’s no reward to look forward to. Rewards keep things interesting and fun. You are able to accomplish more when your life has this kind of balance.
You may seem a bit overwhelmed at first with learning good time management, you might even think you don’t have time for such nonsense. The more you work at it, however, the easier it gets to stay focused and on task. The person you’ve always envied for time management skills might soon be asking YOU for help with their schedule. It is good to have goals. Just don’t go overboard. Live a little, don’t forget the importance of fun in your life too, an over organized life is no fun at all. It’s important to have a good balance of relaxation time in your life too.
